Just in time for Valentine's Day, Love Stories will celebrate love through the ages.
Love Stories
Love Stories explores four stories of love from Greek times to today.Sappho and Amarilli , featuring original opera music by Richard Russell, is a heartfelt meeting of Sappho and a female student, who is also her lover. As the student leaves to marry, Sappho leaves her with a special gift, a song for her wedding day. This piece is performed by Sofia Dimitrova as Sappho and Elizabeth Wood as Amarilli .
In Karpos and Kalamos , choreographer John Ollom has recreated a touching tale of the classic Greek myth where a young man falls in love with another man. They journey through life and discover the true meaning of love until Karpos is lost in a fatal drowning. Kalamos reveres his love for Karpos and vows to wait for him forever. According to the myth, he is turned into a reed at the water's edge while he waits. The ancients were said to hear Karpos and Kalamos crying for each other when the wind would blow through the reeds. Using a contemporary dance vocabulary and drama, with dancers John Ollom and Matt Clemons, this emotionally moving piece will touch all who see it. Original music is being composed for this work by Donna Cribari with live clarinet music being played by Lisa Johnson.
The third piece in Love Stories will be a dramatic work featuring the very talented actor Randy Spence. For the first time, John Ollom will be collaborating with the playwright Robert Lewis Vaughn to
create a dramatic piece that shows a college professor struggling with his bisexuality.
The final story will be a celebration of lesbian seduction and love performed in a contemporary style that is purely John's: fun, innovative and highly energetic. It features our principal dancers, Janelle Abbott and Amber Nalle.
